Lucy's sprinkling service
Lucy was adorable in her little white baptism dress, which was first worn by Mama Sheri. It's the first outfit Lucy has worn (and most likely the last in a good while) that involved lace and a slip. These first two pics were taken before the service at First United Methodist Church of Omaha. Here's Lucy's Great Grandma Shirley, her Uncle Dave, and Great Aunt Marianne:

This shot shows Godparents Boo Tyson and Lori Messinger as well as her Godcousin Katie standing with Mama and Daddy and Lucy as the minister talked about baptism. Grandma Sue and Grandpa Al are standing there too, just not in the picture. Lucy was sleeping peacefully at this point, and first time parents Sheri and Nathan were not smart enough to realize that we should wake her up before handing her to the minister.

Oh, what a rude awakening it is to be handed to a stranger and splashed with cold water. She didn't scream--just whimpered quietly--but since the minister was wearing a microphone it was loud enough to make the congregation chuckle.

In the United Methodist tradition, baptism is not about salvation, and it is obviously not a decision that Lucy has made. Rather, it is a commitment that her parents and the congregation make to Lucy to raise her with our values and be with her on her life's journeys. It was a really great service. We are grateful that so many family members were able to join us, in addition to her Godcousin, Godparents (Will and Laura Anderson from Birmingham are also Godparents, by the way, but could only be there in spirit). To us, Godparents are special adults in Lucy's life who are not related, but who share our values and agree to be a positive influence on her. If there's ever something that Lucy needs that she doesn't want to talk to her parents about, hopefully these four special friends will be people she can talk to. And now a word about Lucy's Godcousin. Sheri's young cousin Katie called the hospital when Lucy was born and asked if she could be her Godcousin. When asked what this meant, she said that she would "pray for Lucy every day and help her to be a good person." Well, who could say no to this offer? Katie is close enough in age that Lucy will see her as hip and cool, yet enough older to able to be a great mentor as she is growing up. It was really wonderful that Katie was able to miss a couple of days of school so she make the trip to Omaha from Wyoming with Great Grandma Shirley to be here for the service. A good time was had by all.
