Lucy's 1st Roadtrip!
Lucy had a great Labor Day weekend and a new experience--driving 6 hours each way to visit Grandma Sue and Grandpa Al in Minnesota. Well...it USED to be 6 hours each way before Lucy. This time it was more like 7-8 hours each way. Mom and Dad learned a few valuable lessons, like NEVER stop the vehicle for any reason if Lucy is sleeping; rest stop picnic tables are far superior to fast food restaurants for nursing and diaper changing on the go; and the inconvenience of one of us sitting in the backseat is far outweighed by its utility for keeping Lucy entertained. It rained most of the time while we were in Minnesota, so the sight seeing was minimal. But this didn't prevent us all from enjoying the REAL goals of the trip--maximum Lucy time for Grandma and also Grandma and Grandpa showing Lucy off to their friends. Below is a representative picture of the showing off--family friend and neighbor Carol demonstrates her baby soothing talent.
Grandma really likes to give Lucy baths, and Lucy seems to be enjoying it as well:

Grandma rocked Lucy to sleep every night in this rocker, which belonged to Lucy's Great Great Great Grandma Julia Watland who took it by train in the late 1800s from Iowa to Utah. Grandma Sue remembers it in her Great Grandma Julia's house (but it was painted black and orange then!). Next, it belonged to Grandma Sue's Grandparents Gifford and Ruth Watland, who stripped the black paint off and where Mama Sheri remembers first rocking in it. Eventually, it made its way to Grandma Susie's house, along with a matching desk. Many generations of Grandma's family have been rocked to sleep in this traveling chair. Here's Grandma in the rocker, enjoying her first chance to give Lucy a bottle:

This last picture is a special treat for the Matney family, with Lucy sporting her flamingo outfit as she grins at Grandma. We just passed the one year mark of the untimely death of Holly, Sheri's cousin. Holly loved flamingos and a lot of us in the family now find ourselves drawn to flamingos as a symbol of her spunk and quirkiness. While in Minnesota, Mom and Grandma found this outfit for Lucy on a clearance rack (for $1.80!!) and we just HAD to have it. Holly's creativity and love for family are only some of the qualities that we hope Lucy will share.

Lucy is the prettiest flamingo I ever saw! It is also fun to see so many family members enjoying her charms. Jim and I will be able to take our turns in just a few weeks.
Love, Auntie Mari
Seems like Lucy enjoys the bath more than Nellie.
What a cutie PIE!
